Bio-Nahwärme, Lauterach

Future-proof, environmentally friendly heat supply using wood for the market town of Lauterach.

The goal:

  • Sustainable heat supply for the market town of Lauterach
  • Energy from wood
  • Securing regional livelihoods and sources of income
  • Utilisation of industrial waste heat from a neighbouring industrial plant
  • Ensuring “e5 Community” rating in the long term

Our solution:

  • 2,000 MWh of surplus thermal energy from a neighbouring industrial plant is fed in. This covers up to 20% of the energy to be produced
  • Wood chip-fired biomass boiler with a capacity of 2,600 kW
  • Moving the wood chips out of the fuel bunker using pushrods
  • Hydraulic lateral conveying to feed the wood chips into the boiler
  • A gas boiler with an output of 5,000 kW is used to provide backup and to cover peak loads
  • The summer load is generated by two condensing boilers with an output of 270 kW each
  • A natural gas-fired microturbine covers the majority of the in-house electricity demand
  • At times of low load, excess electricity is fed into the public grid
  • Thermal waste heat with a capacity of 68 kW is completely fed into the local heating network
  • Only two months installation time for all heating, ventilation, sanitary and compressed air installations

The data:

  • Biomass boiler with flat moving grate combustion: FSR 2600 Nominal heat output 2,600 kW
  • Economiser: Nominal heat output 250 kW
  • Failure and peak load boiler: Vitomax 100-LW Nominal heat output 5,000kW
  • Micro gas turbine: Capstone C30 LP Thermal power 65 kW, Electrical power 28 kW
  • Summer load boiler: Hoval Ultragas D 600 Nominal heat output twofold 270kW
  • Buffer tank: 30,000 litres
  • Wood chip drying: 18,000 m3/h can be heated using waste heat from an industrial plant
  • Fermentation gas extraction: 800 m3/h
  • Mechanical aeration, ventilation and air conditioning of the control room
